Riddle for the day.
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:32:51 AM »

In the interst of lightening the discussions that sometimes become heated I submit the following:

NOTE:  I neither drink alcoholic beverages nor do I support other drinking them.  My psot is simply an exercise in knowledge and logical thought.

Two men sitting in adjacent seats are asked by a woman if they would like a drink. They each tell her that they would like a beer. She asks to check their ID and then sells each a beer.

Four (4) hours later each of these two men ask the same woman for a beer, while sitting in the exact same seats.

She again asks to check their ID. Following this she sells one man a beer, and tells the second that the law prohibits her from seeing him any alcoholic drink.

Why?

NOTE:
1) It was not an issue of hours. She sold the one man the second drink.

2) It was not an issue of one man having to much to drink. Neither had drunk more than the first drink.

3) It was not an issue of a new law going into effect. The exact same law was in effect at each time.

4) Each an was sitting in teh exact same seat each time.

Can you figure it out. Why? What? What is the answer?

Well, here's my guess.  One the second round of drinks, the first man received his drink before cut-off.  She was unable to serve the second one before cut-off time?

Either that or the ID on the second man had expired.

No, serving drinks was still allowed.

No, the ID had not expired.

O.K.  Here it is (drum roll)"

1) Think international airplane flight.

2) The first time the ID was checked, it was noted that it was the birthday of one of the men and he had reached the age he could purchase a beer that very day.

3) Four hours later the airplane had crossed the International dateline amd it was one day earlier than it had been previously.

4) When the second ID was  checked it was noted that it was the day prior to his birthday and he lacked one day of being old enough tp ourchase a beer.  Thererfore, he was refused his purchase.

So if your rocket takes you around fast enough you'd land at the takeoff spot yesterday.

Absolutely not!  You might land in the same spot on the same day, but never on the preceeding day.

The International Date Line does not move.

Contrary to popular perception, quantum physics may allow one to observe the past, but it does not allow one to participate in the past.  So, one might be able to observe one taking off in a rocket the preceeding day, but   one could not return to that event.

But, that is not good science fiction to that is not how the popular press presents it.

It is said that Einstein claimed this is possible provided the rocket travels faster than light.
