The Annual Council has come out with a statement on Church policy regarding Women's Ordination...it is essentially as follows:

The world Church cannot legitimize practices that clearly contradict the intent of General Conference Session actions...  Accordingly, the world Church does not recognize the actions of unions or conferences that have authorized or implemented ministerial ordination without regard to gender.

Does this mean only that women from the conferences that have ordained them so far will not be accepted with the world Church?

Will they continue as now, only with that caveat?

Or will there be some other ramifications?

The motion on the Statement for the action on the Unions that have ordained women or passed something to that effect was carried 264 to 25.

North American Division President Dan Jackson was reported to have said, "I’ve talked with pastors in North America and not one of them feels in disunity. We're united with the world church".

The Gneral Conference Executive Committee did say that it "regards these actions as serious mistakes".

Serious mistakes that need to be rescinded or declared not legitimate by those Unions.

Certainly there are pastors in North America that are opposed to ordaining women now who don't feel in disunity. But since when do we base things on feelings?

The fact is that those who have been persisting in this course have been in disunity, and rebellion.

Following three hours of respectful study and discussion, leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist world church voted to approve a “Statement on Church Polity, Procedures and Resolution of Disagreements in the Light of Recent Union Actions on Ministerial Ordination” on October 16, during the Annual Council of world church leaders held in Silver Spring, Maryland. "We think the discussion was carried on in a very positive manner and that it bodes well for the future decision making processes of the church. The decision clearly spells out the position of the world church and we believe this is something our unions can live with," said Elder Dan Jackson, NAD president.

Interestingly enough, in a description of the pre-vote actions presented by Bonnie Dwyer in her Annual Council Diary in Spectrum, Elder Ted Wilson is quoted as saying, "They do not hold validity in the world territory or the territory where they were made," when answering a question.

Tankiso Letseli, president of the South African Union Conference, had asked about the implications of the statement. “Supposed they elect a woman president, would that president become part of the General Conference Committee? Should we accept these people if they come to our union?”

I wonder what "not having validity in the territory where they [actions of ordination] were made" means and how that would be implemented practically.

Kevin Paulson has given his opinion that the current statement from the committee is only the first step...

He believes that there will now be a waiting period in which the two NAD unions in rebellion will be watched.  If they don't change course but continue in their current direction, the result will be "drastic measures" and "the severest of consequences".
