WEST FRANKFORT — A West Frankfort man who allegedly made threats to take the life of police officers and blow up a police station was arrested Thursday in possession of homemade explosive devices, firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, West Frankfort Police Chief Jeff Tharp said.Matthew J. Galli, 33, was charged with weapons and explosive-related offenses after police were tipped off to the items in his possession.The investigation by police, which included constant surveillance, led to Galli's arrest at about 6 p.m. Thursday at Main and Adams streets in West Frankfort. Two homemade explosive devices were found inside Galli’s vehicle, Tharp said.A search warrant was obtained for Galli’s residence, located at 1411 E. Main, and Illinois Secretary of State’s Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives were requested to respond and assist in the investigation.A search warrant executed late Thursday also uncovered a commercially made device used to silence the report of a firearm, commonly referred to as a silencer or suppressor and a homemade explosive device, Tharp said. Several items associated with manufacturing explosive devices were also located and seized, he added.Numerous firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition were also located and taken.Galli was taken to the Franklin County Jail and charged with weapons and explosive-related offenses. The vehicle Galli was driving was seized and is subject to forfeiture.All explosive devices and related materials were removed by the bomb squad and were taken to a remote location and destroyed by explosive means.
