Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

 1What shall we say, then?

Paul refers back to what he already has stated in order to discover new insights.

I Background. Earlier in Romans Paul has stated that

  A.  All have sinned, 3:23

      1. Throughout the letter Paul presents many contrasts, such as

           a.  Sin><grace
           b.  Glory><death
           c.  Sin><death
           d.  Trespass><grace  5:15
           e.  Condemnation><justification 5:16
           f.   Obedience><disobedience 5:19

 B. The purpose of the law, 5:20. 21

20The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Many years ago I heard of a Christian Church in Russia where the members were taught, based on this text that it was good for the Christians to immerse themselves in sin and evil doing in order to receive the abundance of GRACE. Is this what Paul teaches?

The answer comes in the next chapter.
