Prayer for Elder Don Schneider
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:20:35 PM »

NAD President Don Schneider Confronts Health Matter

"Prayers are asked for Don C. Schneider, president of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, as he announced September 30 that the cyst-like benign tumor that he was treated for two years ago has returned, according to a statement from the division.

"He is expected to undergo surgery on October 3, to drain  fluid and relieve the resulting pressure on the brain. Schneider is expected to be in the hospital for two or three days, and recuperation may take up to four weeks."

If I recall correctly, the first time around it was causing problems with his eyesight.

Must be stressful that it has come back. Let's all remember to pray for Elder Schneider on Friday.

I thought I saw on CA that he had come through the surgery well, but I cannot find the comment now.

Here's a letter from Marti about Don Schneider:

Update

Dear friends,

we were preparing to leave for Annual Council in Manila, plus an
itinerary in Thailandand Cambodia. . . to be gone a full month. But
Don sensed that his vision was slightly blurred.

“Let’s go to the ophthalmologist, even though we got the ‘all
clear for a year’ word only two months before,” I urged him.
“Perhaps it is a cataract . . . maybe you need new lenses . . .”
But tiny changes in the field of vision test sent Don to get a new MRI.

We had a regular 6-month visit with the surgeon within days. After Dr.
Aulisi viewed the films, he told Don that the cyst had re-filled and was
larger than ever. “But you’re not having symptoms!”

“Like what?” we wondered.

“Like terrible headaches. Like weakness on the left side of your
body. Like major loss of vision. How can I operate on a man without
symptoms? Would you get a second opinion? Would you go to the surgeon
with whom I trained? He’s at Harvard . . . at Boston,” proposed
Aulisi.

Of course, we would.

So after walking out of Aulisi’s office on Friday, we made the
appointment. On Monday we were in Boston. . . and got the same opinion
. . . “Although you don’t have symptoms now, you will never know
when they might hit you. You will have to have surgery. Don’t leave
the country.”

So after walking out of the Bostondoctor’s office we called back to
Washingtonto Dr. Aulisi’s office again. “Yes,” his assistant
said, “we’ve expected your call. Your surgery is set for Friday
morning.”

Don’s surgery took place just last Friday, two days ago. Don rested
in the hospital on Sabbath. And today, Sunday, he came home.

The exciting thing is . . . he is feeling good. He has no pain. He is
really alert and full of life! In fact, I think he is doing better than
before he went for surgery.

So what happened? Did God not hear us when we prayed before? Everybody
that was ever healed by Jesus, like Lazarus who was even raised from the dead, has died.
I do not serve God to keep from getting a brain tumor. I serve God because Jesus
created me, and He died for me. I was healed, I truly believe. However, the cyst
came again. And by God’s power and His working through Dr. Aulisi, I will soon be back to work!

Thank you for your prayers and concern. We appreciate you as part of
our family!

Our love,

Marti (and Don)

Here is a new update on Elder Schneider:

**************************************************************

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 — Final Report

Dear friends,

Perhaps you’ve wondered how God is answering your prayers for Don’s health.

On October 4 we said that Don would soon be back at work . . . and he is! He has worked two half days and tomorrow he flies to his first appointment out of town.

Let us tell you some evidences of his growing health—

? His vision seems excellent (much better than just prior to surgery).
? His thermostat is working normally (he had been cold prior to surgery).
? He is sleeping well and waking easily (he had needed 10 hours of sleep prior to surgery).
? His left leg which had seemed weak ever since his first surgery, especially noticeable when he walked down steps, has suddenly gained its normal strength (we believe the previous weakness was a result of the cyst placing pressure on his brain).

Don’s cyst was more than 60 years in the making, since it is believed it was formed at conception. The doctors do not know whether it will fill again or not. Let me tell you about our daily prayer. Because there is no cure for Don’s cyst, only the removal of fluid when it has re-filled, we pray each morning—

Lord, the doctors don’t know what to do to cure this cyst, neither do we. We are totally dependent on You. We release Don to Your care and beg You to protect Don for today. You have all power. If it is according to Your plan and for Your glory, we ask you to heal Don completely. And no matter what, we commit ourselves to You.

When we release all the worry and struggle to “do something”
ourselves, there is a resulting peace. What a blessing it is!

Thank you for continuing to lift Don up in prayer for God, not man, to work in his behalf.

Our love,

Marti and Don

Dear family and friends,

The word has arrived! The Loma Linda University Hospital’s Proton Treatment Center called! Don flew out to California yesterday. His first appointment is today. They tell us that his treatments will take place five days a week, Monday through Friday, and that he will have 25 to 28 treatments. Each treatment takes a matter of one to two minutes, we understand.

There! Now you know as much as we know. J Maybe we can tell you more down the road.

The surgeries that Don has had to date have not stopped the re-filling of the cyst. We are looking now to the proton beams which will target a very specific area of the brain and will not release so much radiation until they arrive at the target site.

There are two places where this treatment can be obtained—Loma Linda and Boston.

We are so thankful for good doctors. But as wonderful as they are, we must have God as the guide for our doctors . . . He must be in charge. God is all powerful . . . and all loving. What a God we serve!

As our neighbor Kevin said yesterday when we greeted one another in the street, “I call your name to God each morning when I pray.” Thank you, dear ones, for doing the same.

Our love,

Marti (and Don)

I am glad for this update.  Elder Schneider was president of NCC for quite a few years.  Thanks, Johann!

As I write this we are with the Schniders, and last night I was translating for them. Wonderful people.

Do has told us how the Lord healed him. For a while he was blind. Four operations for brain tumors verified he has a brain - even though some people doubted it as he is telling us.

I see a number of things in a new perspective having met these wonderful people.
