Title: Victorian Bushfires. Australia
Post by: Emma on February 08, 2009, 03:27:43 AM
The state of Victoria, Australia, has been devastated by bush (wild) fires this weekend.  With some of the highest ever temperatures recorded in the state, winds of
up to 100 kph, drought, the dry eucalyptus forests burnt with terrible ferocity.  Some fires are ongoing. The current death toll is 84 but this will rise as more are found.
Some towns have been virtually wiped out.

I am grateful that the relatives I have in the area are safe, but haunted by the loss of life and life's essentials so many have suffered.

It has been described as the worst day in the State's history.

And another part of Australia is 60% flooded? can you tell us anything about that?

It sounds like Australia is really getting hit hard.

The north of Australia is tropical and they have their monsoon season each summer.  The rains on Queensland - in the pointy bit on the top right of the map
have been persistent this year.   There has been a lot of flood damage, a small boy is missing feared taken by a crocodile, but I have not heard of more deaths.

Emma, are you and your family OK?  And Chrissie?  Is her family affected?  I've been worried about you both as I see the news from Australia.
